Spring Has Arrived
Melting snow drips from eaves — drip, drip, sploosh
The sound is more of a sign, a knowing, a nod
A reckoning of today’s renewal.
Vernal equinox.
A Downy taps — rap-rap ... rap-rap —
on naked wood up high and down the block.
Equal knocks.
It is time for new life, balance
And the renewal of all things living.
The Tundra announces spring — kuk-kuk-kuk —
As it flies north beneath an aqua sky
Beneath the cloudish contrails left behind by a jet.
A departure.
Leaving traces as it goes, like snow melting on sidewalks.
It is a time for warmer air and thawing ground
And queens that lay eggs of pollen brushing bees.
The lake down the road is holding a secret that will soon emerge,
It cannot contain the mystery of how it will break free from death.
Because soon, “crack” — ice gives way and we see — again — life wins.
Every
Single
Year.
Life wins and spring begins.
Equal day.
Equal night.
Balance.
And it always carries hope on a breeze.
A vital force blowing away yesterday. Hushing winter’s yowl and yeilding to life.
A Chickadee down the block calls, Heeeeey sweetie-sweetie-sweetie.
Spring has arrived.
